The death of a Port of Tauranga stevedore, who was run over by a forklift, has cost two companies $55,000 in fines.
Brian Kevin Shannon, 61, of Tauranga, who worked for Independent Stevedoring Limited (ISL) loading and unloading cargo from ships, died from severe head and chest injuries after a forklift carrying a heavy load struck him in June last year.
ISL and on-wharf logistics company C3 Limited, whose employee was driving the forklift, both pleaded guilty in Tauranga District Court yesterday to failing to take all practicable steps to ensure Mr Shannon was not harmed or exposed to risk of harm in his workplace, The Bay of Plenty Times reported.
Judge Thomas Ingram fined ISL $15,000 and C3 $40,000 after taking into account both companies' unblemished safety records, prompt guilty pleas, co-operation with the investigation, remorse and remedial actions already taken.
The court was told the companies had collectively already paid Mr Shannon's family at least $100,000 in financial compensation
