Tim Hunter wins top business journalism accolade

It’s the second year in a row an NBR journalist has taken out the award.

Sat, 23 May 2020

NBR co-editor Tim Hunter has won Business Journalist of the Year award in the 2020 Voyager Media Awards.

The judges commented of Hunter that his winning portfolio “shows a business journalist who is confident in his ability to tackle difficult stories in depth. The writing style has a skip to its beat that keeps the reader engaged. The range of topics is a step apart from straight report writing and that is another reason it’s a winner.”

It is the second year in the row an NBR journalist has won this award – Calida Stuart-Menteath did so last year.

Hunter’s winning portfolio included the story SkyCity’s Chinese high rollers caught in Australian probe, one on Oil company owes millions ‘all over Taranaki’, another on The whistleblower and PGG Wrightson, and a Hunter’s Corner column, Reserve Bank is right on capital.

Hunter has worked for NBR since 2015, and as co-editor since 2018. He has won many journalism awards during his career and his trophy cabinet includes Qantas Media Awards for Best Business, Finance & Consumer Affairs columnist, and Best Newspaper Feature Writer (business). He was also named the inaugural EY Business Journalist of the Year in 2014 and last year once again won the supreme award and best commentary in the NZ Shareholders’ Association annual media awards.

Runner-up in the Voyager Media Awards business category, which was sponsored by BusinessNZ, was Nikki Macdonald from Dominion Post and Stuff. The judges said “business reporting doesn’t have to just be about crunching numbers and publicly listed companies. This writer’s portfolio covered a wide range of business that matters to the wider public. The writer provided clarity and the story flow was excellent.”

A special mention was also given to Zoe Hunter, a reporter with NZME’s Bay of Plenty Times.

The judges said while they didn’t normally comment on entries that don’t make finalist, they would like to encourage Hunter to keep at what she is doing for her community. “Business reporting is important, especially in fast growth communities. This entry was very worthy.”
