SUBSCRIBER-ONLY POLL RESULT: Should Nathan Guy get the chop?

Nathan Guy should be removed as Primary Industries minister, NBR ONLINE subscribers say.

NBR columnist Matthew Hooton says Mr Guy has proven incompetent in the role, which covers the agriculture, forestry, horticulture and seafood sectors and includes responsibility for more than $30 billion of foreign exchange earnings annually.

He says if Mr Key allows Mr Guy to continue in office it will reflect badly on how he values these sectors in the New Zealand economy.

Mr Guy claimed to have been working in the background during the botulism scare. When he finally appeared on TVNZ’s Q+A on Sunday, he lacked knowledge of details on the matter.

The Prime Minister has continued a culture of cutting the deadwood and promoting new talent, seen in his cabinet reshuffle earlier this year when Phil Heatley and Kate Wilkinson were sacked.

Now 45% of NBR ONLINE readers who participated say Mr Guy should also get the chop, while 37% of participants say he should stay.

A smaller portion, 19%, say it is too early too tell.

As usual, the poll was open only to NBR subscribers, 302 participated.
