The first consumer survey since the May budget has shown a significantly improved perception of the economy.
The UMR Research poll found 48 percent now describe the economy as "excellent" or "good" compared with 32 percent in February and 37 percent in April.
The consumer comfort index (CCI), which measures how people feel about financial aspects of their lives, has also improved from -18 percent in February and -12 percent in April to -1 percent.
"This means that those who are feeling negative only just outnumber those who are feeling positive," the survey says.
The biggest recorded CCI improvement was in Wellington, while the more positive climate has not really been felt in provincial South Island.
The survey was conducted between June 16 and 22 and questioned 1000 people aged 18 and over.
The margin of error was plus or minus 2.95 percent.
