Taupo leads New Zealand for the most expensive average hotel room rate at $158.
Average hotel rates in New Zealand increased 13% in 2011 as a result of the success of the Rugby World Cup, and the Christchurch earthquake, knocking the central city’s hotels out of action.
According to the latest Hotels.com Hotel Price Index, hotel prices in New Zealand, which averaged $132, increased more than any other country worldwide in 2011 - above the global average of 4%.
Hotel prices in Christchurch increased 32% to $130, Wellington by 15% to $126 and Hamilton by 13% to $107 per night. Rotorua, Nelson and Auckland also experienced significant price increases.
But international accommodation was cheaper for Kiwis.
Prices fell in Paris by 9% to $235. Overall, prices in France fell 8%. In London, prices fell 7% to $254 and in Venice, prices were down 5% to $273.
New York remains the most expensive destination for New Zealand travelers with an average rise of 10% in 2011 to $338 per night. Prices rose in Honolulu by 14% to $246 but fell in Las Vegas by 15% to average $129 per night.
The cheapest room rates were in Bangkok where the average rate was $109.
Prices in Australia became more expensive by 12% to average $200 in 2011, due to popularity as a business and leisure destination.
