UPDATE / 6.25pm: "We believe that Telecom network mobile data traffic in the South Island and Lower North Island is now flowing again after our engineers rebooted the system," a Telecom spokewoman tells NBR.
"However, it’s possible that there may be further disruptions to services due to intermittent problems as the system catches-up with data traffic demand.
"We understand the frustration customers may have and we apologise for the inconvenience."
EARLIER: A fault with network hardware in Christchurch took out Telecom mobile data at 3.30pm this afternoon, across the lower North Island and South Island.
As of 5.20pm, the fault had yet to be resolved, and Telecom Retail boss Chris Quin had taken to Twitter to explain the outage to customers.
The fault initially caused voice call and txt congestion as well, but that has now been cleared, a Telecom spokeswoman tells NBR.
The company will update at approximately 6.30pm. There is no estimated time to fix the fault, but the company was hoping for soon after 6.30pm. Offshore support had been drafted in.
The pattern of the outage is reminiscent of the infamous XT outages of late 2009/early 2010, when the failure of a Christchurch based radio network controller (RNC), which managed network traffic from the lower North Island and all of the South Island, caused chaos.
