UPDATE: Telecom has appointed Trish Keith, currently GM Customer Experience, to lead Telecom’s dedicated Christchurch recovery team, the company announced in a statement this afternoon.
Of Ralph Chivers - whose related appointment annoucnement was by pre-empted by NBR - the company offered "Ralph will have responsibility for managing key aspects of the recovery project under Trish’s leadership."
Telecom has appointed its GM of government and industry relations, Ralph Chivers, to the new role of programme director, Christchurch earthquake recovery.
He will be full-time in the new position.
Mr Chivers began his career as a maths teacher, including a stint at Christchurch Boys High School.
He subsequently moved across to the telecommunications sector, and engineering then regulatory roles as he crossed between private company and regulatory agency roles.
During stints at the Ministry of Economic Development, Mr Chivers was one of the primary architect's of Telecom's operational separation and, later, charged with setting up Crown Fibre Holdings.
Vodafone has made a similar appointment, naming the company's former Australian CEO, Russell Hewitt, as Christchurch recovery director (in addition to his existing retail role).
Telecom's Chorus division has repaired 55,000 instances of broken wiring since the the quake, the company says, while its Gen-i has established communication services at Christchurch welfare centres. Other measures have included the collection of 5000 analogue phones, which have been sent to the city.
The company has around 1600 staff in Christchurch.
