Tenon, the former Fletcher Challenge Forests, said its Taupo sawmill is returning to four shifts a day to service current and future demand from China.

"The four-shift step-up will take place in the current quarter, and will then make our Taupo site the only grade-sawing mill in the world operating on a 24/7 rotation in today's operating-climate," the company said.

Tenon reports in US dollars and its chief executive has been based in the US.

The company reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of $US5 million ($NZ7 million) in the six months to December 31, from $US6 million in the same period last year.

The bottom line showed a nil return compared to a $US1 million profit last year.

Sales of $US159 million compared with $US16million last year.
