Canterbury dairy company Synlait has selected packaging giant Tetrapak as the main contractor for its second processing plant, on target for commissioning next September.

Synlait said its second plant has specifications to produce 10.5 tonnes of wholemilk powder a day or 8 tonnes of infant formula.

The company confirmed its partnership with Chinese company Bright Dairy and Food was now operational with regulators approving the $82 million merger deal.

Shanghai-based Bright Dairy is China's largest supplier of processed dairy products.

Synlait says the investment is key to its value-added export strategy and expects to double production capacity of 300 million litres of milk a year at Synalit’s existing Dunsandel site south of Christchurch.

The Dunsandel plant produces infant formula and other formulated milk powders packaged for consumers in China and elsewhere.

Synlait Milk chief executive John Penno said the relationship with Bright Dairy was “already providing benefits through access to markets in China, particularly on the eastern seaboard.”
