On September 5, Vladimir Putin donned white overalls, then piloted an ultralight plane - all in the aid of helping to train a lost flock of Siberian cranes, who are trying to find their way from northern Russia to their southern migratory ground in Central Asia.
Apparently the cranes took to Mr Putin. It remains to be seen if NZ Prime Minister John Key will be equally enamored when the pair meet at the APEC summit in Vladivostok Saturday night NZ time.
