Auckland Airport has been voted as the best airport in the Australia Pacific region for the second year running and has moved from number 10 to number 9 in world rankings.

The Skytrax World Airport awards, announced this morning (New Zealand time) in Brussels, gave the top title to Singapore Changi Airport, which also took best airport leisure amenities and best airport in Asia.

More than 9.8 million people from over 100 countries completed survey interviews between July 2009 and March 2010 and the results were close, according to Skytrax, with Changi just inching ahead from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport.

Listed company (NZX:AIA) Auckland Airport also won the staff service excellence award. Chief executive Simon Moutter said it was immensely rewarding to achieve an even better result this year.

He credited efficiency initiatives to improve the traveller experience, including the Lean Six Sigma methodologies, the launch of Smartgate, additional air-services and an investment in departure and arrivals, retail and parking areas as helping to achieve the awards.

Skytrax chairman Edward Plaisted said the staff service was a clear reason why the airport performed well this year and many respondents commented on pleasant security and immigration staff, along with improvements in passenger service information.

Auckland Airport shares were unchanged at $1.92 this afternoon.
