Paul Carroll, general manager of after sales for Toyota New Zealand, said the company was making the changes after receiving advice from Toyota Japan.
"Only 119 cases of defective pipes have been found in the 1.3 million Avensis worldwide, but Toyota is taking a precautionary approach and replacing the pipes at no charge to the owners."
The owners of Toyota Avensis sold new in New Zealand from 2003 to 2008 will be notified by letter and asked to contact their nearest Toyota dealer.
