The ultra fast broadband network began roll out in Tauranga today and details of the Auckland roll out are coming tomorrow.

Ultrafast Broadband, a joint venture between Crown Fibre Holdings and WEL Networks subsidiary Ultrafast Fibre, is carrying out the build.

Today’s launch follows that in Wanganui this month and Hamilton in July, with deployments commencing in Cambridge, Te Awamutu, New Plymouth, Hawera and Tokoroa from 2012.

The entire build is expected to take five years with an estimated value of $300 million, of which about $75 million of Crown funding would be invested in Tauranga.

The Tauranga deployment is part of the Government’s bid to invest $1.3 billion to deliver UFB, or broadband at speeds of more than 100 Mbps, to 75% of the population by the end of 2019.

Ultrafast Broadband Ltd chairman Rodger Fisher said in the release the area’s industries such as marine, food and beverage and transport would benefit from UFB, with improved logistics and better information services.

“In terms of population, Tauranga is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing cities. This has brought about a growing demand and appetite for fast broadband.”

He said UFB would assist the 400 member strong Western Bay of Plenty ICT cluster.  The planned Nautilus technology park near the Tauranga CBD would be among the first areas deployed, Mr Fisher said in the release.

And tomorrow at 10.25am the Minister for Information and Communications Technology Steven Joyce will announce details of the deployment of Auckland’s first UFB-enabling fibre, as well as plans to deploy fibre to 24 centres around New Zealand over the next year.
