Unitec announces two appointments to its executive team

Unitec appoints Tupara Morrison and Mary Johnston to its executive.

Tupara Morrison has taken up the position of Tumu Tauwhirowhiro Maori (Director – Transformation Māori). Of Te Arawa and Ngati Whakaue descent, Mr Morrison has a breadth of governance and senior leadership experience, most recently as Chief Executive Officer of Ngati Whatua Ōrakei Whai Maia Ltd.

He was previously Council Chair at Waiariki Institute of Technology, and also held a senior executive position with Scion, one of NZ’s Crown Research Institutes. He was also recently appointed to the Board of Competenz Trust.

Mr Morrison will be working across the organisation to advance Te Noho Kotahitanga, Unitec’s commitment to work in partnership with Maori, and activate Unitec’s Māori Success Strategy.

Mary Johnston has been appointed to the role of Executive Director, People and Safety.  Ms Johnston comes most recently from Downer New Zealand where she has been the General Manager Human Resources for eight years.

Ms Johnston has a broad experience across a range of industries including education, retail, property, information technology, health and infrastructure. She has extensive change management expertise with a focus on developing and implementing strategy in partnership with business leaders. Coming from the high risk safety environment of construction, she has worked closely with health and safety professionals to drive a zero harm culture.

Her portfolio will include human resources, organisation development, professional development, recruitment, payroll, equity and diversity, and health and safety.
