Flights to and from Auckland Airport have been disrupted by unusually thick fog.
Airport spokesman Richard Llewellyn said international flights and main trunk routes were generally unaffected, but flights using older and smaller aircraft were facing difficulties. "I wouldn't describe it as chaos, but there have been multiple delays on regional flight."
At least 20 flights have been cancelled, and more than two dozen delayed. The status of possibly affected arrival can be tracked here, and depatures here
Mr Llewellyn said this mornings' thick fog was uncommon, but not unheard of. "We typically have 4-5 days a year like this. Typically they’ll burn off in a few hours. but ’I've got to say this is lasting a little longer than usual," he said
He expected the fog to burn off in the near future.
More modern aircraft, such as those flying international and main trunk routes, equipped with technology allowing them to operate in low visibility environments, Mr Llellwyn said.
