Coffee dates?

Starbucks, which is well aware that many couples’ first dates are held in one of their stores, is revving up its romance efforts.

The international coffee giant has made a deal with Match.com, a US dating site that notes that one out of three first dates take place in a coffee shop.

Match.com will now have a “Meet at Starbucks” feature that will pick out the closest Starbucks location where a date can happen.

In addition, on February 13, Starbucks is hosting a “World Largest Starbucks Date” event, where Starbucks locations will be playing romantic music, will sell special menu pairings (“Caffé Verona Coffee Press for Two and a Double Chocolate Chunk Brownie”) and will have special photo props where couples can share photos of their “Starbucks date.”

Apart from the US, it will be held in markets such as Canada, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, China and South Korea.

“There’s no better time to celebrate meaningful moments of connection, and encourage new ones than during Valentine’s Day,” says Sharon Rothstein, Starbucks global chief marketing officer.

According to Match.com, more than one in three singles cite coffee dates as their favourite first-date activity.

Krispy Kreme in the US has likewise launched a special Valentine’s Day promotion with heart-shaped, X and O-shaped donuts. New this year is the Luv Bug donut, bearing a lady bug face.

The 2015 edition of Valentine’s Day products at Dunkin’ Donuts includes heart-shaped Cookie Dough and Brownie Batter donuts and dessert lattés.
