Words on a Small Island
The Waiheke Book Festival
November 1- 3
Now in its fifth year, the Waiheke Book Festival, Words On A Small Island has become one of the country’s great boutique literary events, with major authors and emerging talent along with a series of book launches, workshops, films and a literary lunch.
This year the lead authors include Emily Perkins and Witi Ihimaera alongside new writers such as Zoë Meager, who was this year’s Pacific area Commonwealth Short Story Prize winner.
Among the highlights of the three-day festival are a session featuring Marti Friedlander talking about her new book Self Portrait, which traces her life as a photographer documenting people, places and events in New Zealand.
A new book, Coast: A New Zealand Journey, which is a celebration of the coastline and the unique individuals who live ther, will belaunched. Written by Bruce Ansley, the book features photography by award-winning photographer Jane Ussher.
The big event of the weekend is the Sunday afternoon gala lunch at Mudbrick Restatement where inspirational authors and creatives will speak and perform. They are painter Karl Maugham, writers Witi Ihimaera, Bruce Ansley and Emily Perkins and John Barnett, the producer of some of New Zealand’s most successful films, including Whale Rider. There will also be a performance by Kiri Eriwata, a singer songwriter who composes in English and Maori.
Martin Taylor will run a couple of workshops on digital publishing exploring self publishing e-books and using the wide range of digital media to publish, market, promote and influence.
