New Zealand's war medals could soon be displayed in Wellington if plans for a military museum go ahead.

Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson was supporting the idea of a museum beside the National War Memorial Carillon and the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in central Wellington, the Dominion Post reported.

The site also includes the former army General Officer Commanding Building, and the HMNZS Olphert building.

A spokesman for Mr Finlayson said exhibits for the museum would most likely be loaned from other museums.

"It wouldn't be in competition or subjugate the existing collections. The minister certainly hasn't started making plans for the support services' collections. Any sort of combined ... museum is just an idea at this stage."

The proposal follows the theft of 96 medals from the National Army Museum in Waiouru in 2007. The medals were recovered.

However, the proposal had not arisen from security concerns, the spokesman said.

Waiouru museum trustee Don McIver said only "it's early days".
