Outgoing Stock Exchange chief executive Mark Weldon’s newly acquired winery has a 2010 rateable value of $2.1 million.
Local real estate sources said the Olssen’s Winery at Bannockburn, Otago would have sold at close to the rating value.
Grape growing land values have plunged over the past couple of years, although well established wineries with markets have fared much better.
Mr Weldon is expected to continue in his Stock Exchange job until next year.
Meanwhile, he and his marketing consultant wife, Sarah Elliot, have taken over control of Olssen’s while continuing to employ wine maker Jen Parr.
Olsen’s’ was founded 22 years ago by Heather McPherson and John Olssen. They have won many awards for their Pinot Noir.
