The number of days of work per person lost because of work stoppages dropped almost 90% from 2008-2009, according to Statistics New Zealand.

Eighteen work stoppages ended in the September 2009 year, compared with 30 the year before.

In the September 2008 year those stoppages involved 5401 employees and caused 10,782 per-person working days and an estimated $2.7 million in wages and salaries to be lost.

In the September 2009 year the 15 complete and three partial strikes involved 2010 employees and caused 1382 days and an estimated $0.3 million to be lost.

The transport, postal and warehousing industry had the largest number of stoppages in the September 2009 year (five) and both the largest number of employees involved (about 1500) and estimated loss in wages and salaries (just less than $0.2 million).

In seven of the year’s stoppages the dispute was unresolved.

Statistics New Zealand figures show the number of work stoppages recorded has been trending downwards since 1996, when it peaked at about 75.
