Work on the Viaduct Harbour bridge for pedestrians and cyclists at Wynyard Quarter is starting this week as part of the $100 million of construction in the region in the year to June 2011.

The bridge, Wynyard Crossing, will link the Wynyard Quarter development with the eastern Viaduct.

This week the old Team New Zealand building at Halsey St is being removed, with a plaza to be constructed in its place where bridge-crossers will step back on to land.

“The move will not upset the team’s plans to take part in the next America's Cup in 2013,” Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton said, adding that its head office was moving just next door to the building Alinghi once occupied.

Auckland City Council said the bridge has been designed to have minimal impact and be good for pedestrians, cyclists and boaties alike.

The $2 billion Wynyard Quarter redevelopment managed is by Sea+City. This bridge will be funded by Auckland Regional Holdings, the New Zealand Transport Authority and Auckland City Council.

The bridge is expected to be finished in June 2011.
