Works have started at shopping centre giant Westfield’s Waikato Chartwell mall, with 15 new retailers, in a $33 million expansion as part of its $500 million growth plan for the next ten years in New Zealand.
“Over the past two years our team has been working on the planning for this development, and all necessary consents have been obtained. Our pre-leasing program has been positively received giving testament to how strong the Westfield Chartwell brand is in the market,” Westfield NZ director Justin Lynch said.
Farmers will be the main tenant, fueling the $33 million worth of extra space with a two- level Farmers department store making up 5700m2 of the 7131m2 addition to the building.
“Farmers has long wanted to be in a position to offer a full product range and to find a way to be able to extend our fashion offer. This expansion has enabled us to achieve both these goals, and to be the anchor tenant was an easy business decision,” Farmers' managing director Rod McDermott said.
Works on the expansion will begin next month, and will be completed by this time next year.
The 28,500m2 Chartwell Westfield has a six screen cinema complex, a 450-seat Foodcourt, 126 retailers and a Foodtown supermarket.
Westfield has $3 billion worth of property assets in New Zealand, including Albany, Newmarket, Downtown Auckland, Riccarton, Queensgate and Pakuranga.
