It seems that most New Zealanders know how electricity intensive an aluminium smelter can be.
That’s largely because New Zealand Aluminium Smelters’ facility at Tiwai Point consumes 13% of the nation’s electricity supply, and necessitated the building of the Manapouri Dam in the late 1960s.
