1-day to run Trade Me daily deals

Trade Me's daily deal offers on its homepage will be run by 1-day from November onwards.

Trade Me’s daily deals will be run by 1-day from November 1.

The daily deals Trade Me offers on its site were launched in June 2010 and were separate from Treat Me, the daily deal and group buying site run by Trade Me, head of marketplace Craig Jordan said (1-day also made a foray into group buying with its 1-dayout site, which was recently closed - a victim of an increasingly crowded market).

Now 1-day is to power these deals from November onwards, offering three deals a day on products, from 10am for 24 hours or until sold out.

Mr Jordan said the main reason for the move to 1-day was to continue to put good deals in front of Trade Me members.

“We think there’s always been a lot of potential in the channel.”

He said partnering with 1-day gave Trade Me the opportunity to unlock that potential.

Trade Me's contribution
Trade Me would get a percentage of the total sales, along the lines of the success fees which occurs on the site already, Mr Jordan said.

Trade Me’s contribution would be traffic, Mr Jordan said, with more than 700,000 people visiting its homepage each day and a membership of more than 2.8 million members.

Its daily deals channel has a subscriber base built up since its launch, a release from the site said.

1-day to hire more staff
1-day sales and marketing manager Race Louden said selling deals via Trade Me’s site was the next step in developing the 1-day, which had become the largest daily deals provider in New Zealand since its launch in 2007.

He said the deals from 1-day would be tailored specifically toward the Trade Me community, in that there would be no crossover with deals on 1-day.

He said this meant that both 1-day and Trade Me would offer three deals a day on each site, which would be completely different.

“We want to  make sure it’s interesting for customers and they’re not just seeing the same stuff as on 1-day.”

To facilitate this, 1-day had hired five more people across the product to web team, which was not including the warehouse and customer services teams.

Mr Louden said when these were taken into account and with the demand 1-day expected to see, new hires to the 200 strong workforce could reach double figures.

1-day would be responsible for sourcing the deals, customer service, and delivery of products available through the Trade Me daily deals

Natural fit
Mr Louden said the partnership with Trade Me was a “natural fit” as it was the original online success story in New Zealandand 1-day was the original and best in the daily deal spectrum.  He said the companies also had a similar structure and were a good “culture” fit.

He stressed that the partnership was purely a supply contract, and 1-day had no involvement in Trade Me’s business.

Trade Me’s existing daily deal subscribers did  not need to do anything to receive the new deals from 1-day as this would be automatic, the release said.
