Internal design was approved this week for a $15 million plus multi-purpose community centre at Kaitaia that will be completed by the end of next year.
The development on South Rd will include a theatre and cinema, community centre, library, museum, information and council services centre.
Local council contributed $9.5 million towards the project and the Te Ahu Charitable Trust donated a further $5.5 million from other sources.
Fit-out designers Story Inc had their plans approved by the Te Ahu Charitable Trust organising the project this week and now a more detailed design phase can start.
“With the foundations all but completed now, we are on track to have the facility completed by the end of 2011. Steel work and tilt panels are expected to arrive on the site early in the new year. Once erected these will provide the first real appreciation of the size and prominence of the new building," Te Ahu Charitable Trust general manager Mark Osborne said.
“It is the largest project of its nature that I am aware of ever in the far north.”
The development’s aim is to create a place for locals and tourists that “nurtures and shares the stories and culture” of the community in a sustainable facility that will be a landmark building.
Construction is expected to open by the end of 2011.
