A network software glitch is being blamed for connection problems experienced by many customers of mobile phone company 2degrees today.

Many of the network's 580,000 customers were having problems making calls, sending texts and accessing emails from about 11am to 3pm.

Communications manager Michael Bouliane said the problems were intermittent during that four-hour period.

"People would be making a call and getting a message saying their connection could not be made, and then trying 30 seconds later and getting through," Mr Bouliane told NZPA.

"The same problem was being experienced with texts and emails."

Mr Bouliane said he was unaware how many customers had difficulties, though he said the problems did not appear to be confined to one geographical area.

A network software problem was believed to be the cause, and Mr Bouliane said most of the problems seemed to be resolved by 3pm.
