2degrees, which launched last August with all pre-pay plans, has launched its first post-paid offer.

As the carrier has previously hinted, the contract term is a brusque one month.

For $39, 2degrees customers - or as they can now be called, subscribers - will get 120 minutes of calling time and 600 texts to any domestic phone network.

In a pre-emptive strike, Vodafone launched its own one-month plans on August 3, offering 60 minutes (not rolling over) and 600 txts plus one "best mate" for $39.95.

Minutes rollover
Apart from its Mini-Me duration, the new plan's signature element is that un-used minutes carry over to the next month - or at least they do for up to 12 months (un-used text does not carry over).

That gives 2degrees a point of difference - and it's one-month contract customers an incentive to stay loyal.

2degrees says research it commissioned shows 70% of people do not use all of their minutes in any given month.

It also found approximately 660,000 New Zealanders own at least one mobile phone on a post-pay account and pay the bill themselves.

44 cents a minute
The 44c a minute rate - assuming you use all your minutes - won't blow anybody's socks off (2degrees' cheapest pre-pay rate - if you use all your minutes - is 30 cents/minute).

And some contract customers will be disappointed that data is not included in the monthly deal.

But still, once again 2degrees has made life a little more interesting for those in the market for a new mobile plan.
