Telecom, Vodafone and 2degrees are all active - often hyperactive - on social networks.
When Telecom’s XT network failed from Taupo south this morning, Vodafone’s Twitter account maintained a diplomatic silence.
2degrees advised its Twitter followers of the XT outage, linking to a post on its Facebook page (which boasts 22,934 fans).
The company defended its post, saying on Facebook: [We’re] not "slagging off the competition". The XT network outage is affecting our customers when they call and text their friends on XT. Rather than leaving them in the dark and assuming that there is something wrong at our end, we've let them know exactly what is happening.”
But on Twitter, things took a naughtier turn as 2degrees’ Twitter account - apparently being driven by the telco’s inhouse spin doctor, Bryony Hilless - tweeted to Geekzone’s Mauricio Fretais:
“Hey Mauricio - how many more Telecom XT network outages will it take you to finally switch over to 2degrees? :-)”.
The Geekzone boss, who had already tweeted he was using “Using the not so cheap @2degreesmobile Edge mobile data during @telecomnz outage” replied that his data use - 3GB a month - would make 2degrees an expensive full-time proposition.
Indeed it would. With 2degrees currently charging 50 cents a megabyte for its 2.5G mobile data (it promises cheaper rates when it launches its 3G upgrade later this year), poor Mauricio would be hit up for $1500 a month for his 3GB.
When will 2degrees’ 3G service arrive? The telco couldn’t say.
Some conversations are best not to start.
