NZ on Air has granted $5 million to fund Hope and Wire, a six-part drama series set in Christchurch in the aftermath of the earthquakes.

Gaylene Preston (Bread and Roses, Mr Wrong), will be producing and directing the series, which she has co-written with Dave Armstrong. It will also be produced by Chris Hampson and executive produced by Sue Rogers.

NZ on Air says Hotwire "presents a fictionalised mix of strong characters – families that fly apart, others that come together – to illuminate the best and the worst of what happens when a city literally loses its heart."

The series will screen on TV3.

There was no immediate word on who would play any contemporary poltical figures who incidentally appear in the drama.

But if budget allows for an international cast, NBR would like to see John Goodman as Gerry Brownlee, Gerard Depardieu as Roger Sutton and Brad Dourif as Bob Parker.
