Geonet recorded a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Taupo region, at a depth of 150km, according to the initial GNS report.

The earthquake hit at 3.36pm, 30km west of Taupo.

Geonet reported it was widely felt throughout the North and South Islands, with no damage expected.

The well-worn Twitter search term #eqnz got more mileage; some tweets displayed Kiwi stoicism, with one man remarking his wife hadn't felt a thing while feeding the sheep.
