The common wisdom among Wellington's cafe set is that their caffeine fuelled drinking holes are a bit like their town and recession proof.
So it will shock the suits of Wellington down to their Americanos to learn that Espresso Republic on Featherston Street was open for breckie Thursday morning this week, but was a gone-burger by afternoon tea.
Onlookers saw the usually busy cafe suspiciously decamping into a removals truck and, by 5pm, all that was left was the detritus of a departed cafe.
The parting and all too unsubtle closing message to landlord Sir Robert (Bob) Jones decried the $15,000 month rent and the fact no one would touch it for this reason, not even for a gold coin.
Perhaps they should have tried Trade Me, or is this the double-dip in action?
