UPDATED - The Wellington Phoenix will hold a press conference this afternoon to address the liquidation application against it.
The Accident Compensation Corporation has applied to the High Court in Wellington to place Century City Football – the backer of the Phoenix club - into liquidation.
Phoenix owner and prominent property developer Terry Serepisos is listed as the sole director of Century City Football.
ACC acting chief executive Dr Keith McLea said in a release this morning that Century City owes ACC more than $260,000 in unpaid levies, some of it dating back several years.
“We fully appreciate the potential impact on the Wellington Phoenix football team,” Dr McLea said.
“But in the end, it's simply not fair that other business levy payers are forced to continue subsidising Century City Football, since injured staff members of Century City Football are still helped by ACC whether or not their employer has paid its levies.”
Dr McLea felt that ACC had been “more than reasonable, over an extended period, with the company” – and needed to be consistent with how it would treat any other business.
Mr Serepisos could not be reached by NBR for immediate comment this morning.
