ACT list candidate Peter Tashkoff says he will challenge party leader Rodney Hide for the Epsom nomination at the next election.

"My opinion is that Rodney Hide is a liability to the ACT Party, a failure as a leader and that he has got to go," Mr Tashkoff said in a statement tonight.

"There are dozens, potentially hundreds, of ACT members past and present who would do a far better job of representing ACT in Epsom, and Epsom in Parliament, than the present incumbent."

Mr Tashkoff, a party activist, is number seven on the party list and has previously criticised Mr Hide.

ACT has five MPs in Parliament and if Heather Roy quits she will be replaced by candidate number six, Dunedin businesswoman Hilary Calvert.

Mr Tashkoff said in a statement tonight he was encouraging other aspirants to throw their hats in the ring as well and challenge Mr Hide for the nomination.

As ACT's future in Parliament depends on Mr Hide retaining Epsom at the next election, Mr Tashkoff's bid to get rid of him is sure to fail.
