The Act Party is due to announce what it describes as a new “high profile” candidate this afternoon.
While it is not officially confirmed, it is widely expected the candidate will be former Federated Farmers president Don Nicolson, of Southland.
Mr Nicolson's term as federation president finished within the last fortnight, leaving him free to seek political office.
Given his opposition to the emissions trading scheme and his support for free markets, it would appear Mr Nicolson's views sit comfortably with Act.
He is also scheduled to be Act MP Rodney Hide's guest at his next Epsom reportback meeting in Auckland on July 25.
Mr Nicolson served on the national board of Federated Farmers from 2003 and was president of Federated Farmers Southland for three years.
In 2006 he was appointed the Federation's representative on the ACC Stakeholder Reference Group and was chairman of Local Government Forum between 2004 and 2008.
Sitting Act MPs Roger Douglas and Heather Roy have both said they will not return to parliament after the November general election.
