Admen’s Bangerritos are bang on

A co-founder, Colenso BBDO's Ben Polkinghorne, describes them as a sausage that tastes like a burrito.

New Zealanders have already had a strong taste of what happens when an adman gets into the food industry – Peter Cullinane’s Lewis Road Creamery is a runaway success.

History is quickly repeating itself, with two advertising creatives making Bangerritos, a combination of a burrito and a sausage.

A co-founder, Colenso BBDO’s Ben Polkinghorne, describes them as a sausage that tastes like a burrito.

“Unlike other sausages, we don’t mince the crap out of everything. Rather, we put in whole black beans and chunks of red cabbage and use free range pork with no preservatives,” he says.

More than 10,000 bangerritos have been sold since launching in December and they are now available in gourmet supermarkets Nosh and Farro Fresh. Next week they will be available in My Food Bag.

Continuing the gourmet theme, Mr Polkinghorne and his Bangerrito partner Matt Simpkins serve them in a tortilla with guacamole, hot sauce and sour cream.

Mr Polkinghorne, who has no chef experience, tells NBR Food Industry Week that he’s always had a passion for burritos, even going so far as creating a website that reviews them.

He says he isn’t sleeping much, having to balance his food business and his advertising job.

However, it’s an addictive business and Mr Polkinghorne says it is especially encouraging after having stalls at Laneway, George FM and his own workplace.

The start-up emits a cheeky charm. “Probably gluten free,” reads its sign at Laneway.

The next stop? Overseas, of course. The ambitious admen have plans to build a “bangerrito empire.”
