Model and actor agency August Models and Talent was fined $10,000 by the Department of Labour for underpaying a Shortland Street extra.

The case began in mid-2009 when the actor was not paid $258 of minimum wage money earned by acting on the television soap.

August Models and Talent, which represents many models and actors through its affiliated Kimberly Hill Management, did not appear at the Employment Relations Authority hearings.

“What was a relatively small amount to be paid in outstanding wages has become a significant cost because the company failed to comply with minimum employment rights and failed to turn up to hearings,” Department of Labour Auckland Central acting service manager Linda Wilson said.

“The Department gave the company adequate opportunities to explain its position and to make arrangements to honour its obligations to the employee, but it failed to do so.”
