A spokesperson for Air New Zealand said today that demand to get out of Christchurch was "really strong". This had resulted in a waitlist. Air New Zealand would monitor the demand and provide additional services, and an extended $50 flight service where needed. There were plenty of seats on flights to Christchurch, she said.
Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe, who is in Christchurch, had last night been in contact with the Prime Minister and Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker offering the full resources of the airline.
As of 10pm last night, Jetstar was operating a full schedule from and to Christchurch airport and had offered 7 additional services to and from the airport.
The company was offering to waive change fees and fare differences when customers changed their bookings up to 11 April. After this, customers could book up to 12 months after their booked date of travel and the change fee only would be waived. Various other offers involving rebooking are on offer, but no discounted flights from the city.
