Air NZ offers alternate UK flights as strike looms

Passengers scheduled to fly to London offered alternate flights due to massive 'walkout' strikes taking place on Wednesday in the UK.

Flights due to depart for London tomorrow will face heavy delays after concerns that passengers may be left stranded at Heathrow Airport immigration due to nationwide strike actions.

Warnings from airport authorities indicate that queues at immigration may cause up to 12-hour delays, with several indications pointing towards having to hold passengers on their planes to clear overcrowded customs queues.

Around 2 million British public workers, which include immigration and customs officers, are expected to take part in a one-day walkout on Wednesday.

Passengers due to travel on the only fight to London on Wednesday, NZ2 via Los Angeles are currently being contacted with the opportunity to reschedule their flights to a more suitable day.

However, passengers departing from London will not be affected by the Wednesday strike said Mark Street, spokesman for Air New Zealand.

The walkout strike planned for Wednesday is expected to top the scale of Britain’s 1979 strikes, where tens of thousands of workers halted their daily jobs over pay disputes.

Some labour unions claim that the action could even surpass Britain’s 1926 general strike, which saw around 1.75 million people joining the walkout.

Further updates on flight delays for the UK may be made as the situation develops.
