The Prime Minister shares many viewers’ frustration at the constant rule challenges and protests that dog the America’s Cup - and have immediately had an impact on the action in San Francisco as the 2013 event kicks off.

The first race of the Louis Vuitton challenger series turned into a farce, with Team New Zealand sailing around the course alone after Luna Rossa boycotted the race Monday morning NZ time.

The Italian team refuses to participate until an official hearing into its challenge to design changes.

As things stand, all three opening races scheduled for this week will be one-boat farces.

“If they can win the Cup and bring it back to New Zealand, there’s no question that is just a brilliant thing for Auckland and for New Zealand and a great way to promote the country,” John Key told TVNZ’s Breakfast this morning.

“But you’ve got to say a sport that spends about as much time practising as it does in the court room is a bit tiresome for everyone really.”
