Progressive Party leader and Wigram MP Jim Anderton has not ruled out running for the Christchurch mayoralty against Mayor Bob Parker later this year.

He said yesterday there was "an extraordinary degree of angst, anger and concern" over how the city council was being run.

But running for the top council job was complicated by his responsibilities to Parliament, he told The Press.

Mr Anderton has been tipped to stand down as Wigram MP at next year's election.

However, if he became mayor in October, it would force a by-election.

He said he would make a decision within the next week or two.

Mr Parker said Mr Anderton's overtones were nothing more than "a political power play" by a left leaning politician.
