Android Market relaunched as Google Play

Music, movies, e-books to be conflated into one cloud-based tool.

The Android Market has a new name.

Google Play was launched yesterday, a cloud-based digital entertainment destination where users can find, enjoy and share their favourite movies, music, books and apps – both on the web and on their Android phone or tablet.

It will compete with Apple’s iTunes store, and further bolster the rapidly growing android market.  Google’s android phones overtook iPhone sales in August 2010.

The news coincides with Apple unveiling its latest upgrade on the iPad 2, released in the US on March 16, as the competitors grapple for greater market share.  The “New iPad” is rumoured to become available in NZ in late March.

Users of Google Play can store up to 20,000 songs for free, as well as browse the largest selection of eBooks and rent thousands of movies.

The previous Android Market, Google Music and the Google eBookstore will be amalgamated into Google Play.  The Android Market app will become the Google Play Store app over the coming days.

Google Director of Digital Content, Jamie Rosenberg said its long-term goal is “to roll out as many different types of content as possible to people around the world, and we’ll keep adding new content to keep it fresh,”

More information on the Google’s new cloud-computing merger can be found here.  The Google Music service is not yet available in NZ.
