The Australia and New Zealand Banking Group's lawyers have warned board members not to use iPads to manage their documents.

The group was warned that the devices can not securely store sufficient information if the papers were required in a court case, as reported by the Australian Financial Review.

Chief information officer Anne Weatherston said under Australian law, annotation of the board papers was an issue.

She said lawyers had warned her annotations of board papers constituted a legal document.  While the document could be secured, annotations could not, she said.

A spokesman said the group preferred the eight board members not to use iPads due to a "quirk" in Australian law.

Many board members have found using tablets such as iPads a useful way to manage documents, with NZX-listed Diligent Board Member Services capitilising on this by developing its Boadbooks technology, which allows users to access and annotate company documents.

The company attributed its record quarterly sales in the first three months of 2011, with a first quarter net annualised licence fee income of $US1.88 million that was more than three times higher than a year earlier, to the rising interest in its iPad application.

NBR is waiting on a full response from the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group.
