ANZ says it expects no disruptions to services tomorrow although some of its workers have decided to strike.

Union member staff of New Zealand’s biggest bank have been threatening to strike over proposed "flexible" working provisions where the bank pre-sets working hours on rosters.

In a statement the bank says it expects all branches to remain open and that all banking services will be available to customers.

First Union has said ANZ workers in Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, Oamaru and Dunedin will be on strike, attending rallies on Friday while workers in many other places will walk off the job.

The union says 96% of members rejected the bank's latest offer.

Retail and finance secretary Maxine Gay said that ANZ workers have been prepared to allow up to 20% of the workforce to be flexible but ANZ wanted every new worker to start on the "insecure" work contract.

Yesterday, legal commentator Bill Hodge cast doubt over the effectiveness of the strike tactics.

“It is an arrangement similar to what Ports of Auckland wanted, which just led to the union having decreased clout at the waterfront because the port can work with contractors.”

“Striking should only be done if it is effective and the union should appreciate that, unless you are going to win it’s a terrible thing to undertake.
