Apple jumps to number two in NZ PC market

The Australasian PC market ended the 2011 calendar year with 6.8 million shipments or 6% year-on-year growth, according to IDC - solid if unspectacular next to the booming tablet market.
Apple took the number one spot in the Australian consumer market for the first time during the fourth quarter. The company is enjoying a "halo effect" that sees increasing iPhone and iPad shipments boosting sales of its desktop and laptop shipments. However, it was beaten into number three overall by Acer, which landed a huge education deal, and HP.
In New Zealand, where Apple has a relatively lower profile, Apple sits at number three for the year with HP retaining its traditional dominance. However, Apple did jump to number two during the fourth quarter, with a bump in sales of its computers coinciding with the release of the new iPhone 4S.

IDC sees slower times ahead. The market researcher predicts 2% year-on-year-growth in New Zealand, and the same in Australia, during calendar 2012.
During the fourth quarter of 2011, all segments were week bar the education market in Australia, which saw 10% year-on-year growth with major rollouts to schools as part of the DER (Digital Education Revolution) program.
In New Zealand, 187,000 units were shipped during the fourth quarter - a flat result as IT spending lagged after the Rugby World Cup.
