Apple iOS devices (iPhone and iPad) have over-taken Google Android-based phones in New Zealand market share – or at least according to one mobile ad services company.
InMobi recorded the following market share for the second quarter:
A spokeswoman told NBR ONLINE that "Nokia OS" meant the Finnish phone maker's in-house Symbian software, not Microsoft Windows which has yet to register in InMobi's survey.
InMobi operates internationally. The spokeswoman said the above figures were drawn from 1.2 million mobile ads served in the New Zealand market.
Why the comeback? InMobi credits the fact that Telecom and 2degrees have joined Vodafone as official carriers and growth in iPad sales.
Market research IDC has found that Android holds double the iPhone's share in NZ, mirroring the worldwide trend. It also found Android was growing faster.
However, many Androids are now sold at budget prices, with some models sold for as little as $149 off contract.
In that price band, smartphone owners less likely to have data plans that make them inclined to surf the web and get served up ads from InMobi and others.
