'Arrogant' Apple should have made larger screen iPhone - Woz
Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak says company wrong to think people want a thumbable handset.
Apple recently released the 4-inch display iPhone 5.
The company told NBR a key aim was to keep the handset "thumbable" - that, is all parts of the touchscreen reachable when the iPhone is used in one hand. Giant Androids like the 4.8-inch Samsung Galaxy S III were deemed unthumbable.
Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak told South African podcast TalkCentral he thought that was the wrong approach.
“Part of me wishes that Apple had not be so, kind of arrogant and feeling ‘We’re the only one with the right clue’ and I wish they had made a small and a large version of the iPhone. It would have been great for me,” Mr Wozniak said.
“I think Apple tricked itself and said, ‘Oh, you can reach everything with one thumb’, and I don’t see anyone having trouble using the larger screens Apple said that as a defensive move because when the other phones came out they all had larger screens. Not all people want the same thing and a lot of people really want the big screens.”
Meanwhile, Samsung has announced a smaller, 4-inch version of its Galaxy S III.
A spokeswoman for Samsung NZ told NBR there was no local release date for the new handset at this point.
