ASB Bank warns customers about rogue Netflix payments

A number of customers have had money unexpectedly deducted from their accounts.

Sat, 14 Jul 2018

ASB Bank is warning customers about rogue Netflix payments that might appear on their statements.

A statement on the bank's website says: "A number of ASB customers have recently seen unauthorised Netflix transactions on their Visa debit or credit card accounts. We are currently working to identify and resolve these transactions. If you have a query about an unauthorised Netflix transaction or are concerned please call our contact centre on 0800 803 804."

A number of ASB customers have posted to social media that they have seen an unexpected $17.99 charge from Netflix.

The bank is reversing the charges.

It's not immediately clear if the problem is a billing foul-up or some kind of security issue.

NBR has asked ASB and Netflix for comment.

ASB responded with a holding statement ("ASB became aware that a number of customers had unauthorised transactions from Netflix appear in their accounts.  We are working with Visa and Netflix to resolve and refund these charges. We’re not able to comment on individual customers or what caused this issue. We will provide further updates to customers as we resolve the issue.")

However, the bank has yet to answer questions about how many customers have been affected, and whether a security breach is involved.
