Auckland’s deputy mayor Penny Hulse has received a nice Christmas present from her council - a $40,000 pay rise.

The Auckland Council allocated the remaining funds it had available from the Remuneration Authority’s remuneration pool at its meeting today.

The authority sets the base rates then gives some money to the council to allocate once it has decided on its structures and the responsibilities of each councillor.

The council had $200,000 to spend and used some of it to increase the deputy mayor’s pay from $80,000 to $120,000 a year.

Another $48,000 was spent increasing the pay for chairpersons from $80,000 to $96,000 and $112,000 was used to increase the pay of councillors from $80,000 to $88,000.
