Auckland Council rates will rise by 3.7%, much lower than originally proposed, mayor Len Brown announced this afternoon.
The projected rates increase inherited from the Auckland Transition Authority was 9.3%, which Mr Brown lowered to a maximum rates increase of 4.9% last month.
Today, he said that council-wide efficiencies meant the budget now had a base rates increase of 3.7%.
This was achieved through $81 million of efficiencies and savings, he said.
“My focus has always been to achieve affordable rates increases close to the rate of inflation, at the same time as continuing to invest in our communities and achieve balance and growth,” Mr Brown said.
Auckland Council’s final annual plan will be signed off in June.
A spokesman for the mayor confirmed to NBR that the 3.7% increase level was for both residential and commercial rates.
