Auckland’s strategy to become more export-focused and business-friendly has seen two new management positions created.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) has appointed a new general manager of business, attraction and investment and a general manager of economic growth.

David Caselli, who has worked with ATEED to develop foreign direct investment strategies, will take up his role as business, attraction and investment general manager from January 21.

UK resident Patrick McVeigh starts in the economic growth role from February after a stint developing economic, employment and innovation strategies. He has also worked on London’s economic development strategy and has consulted for regional development agencies, local authorities and government departments.

ATEED chief executive Brett O’Riley says the new roles are part of the city’s focus on five key priorities:

  • Grow a business friendly and well-functioning city
  • Develop an innovation hub of the Asia-Pacific rim
  • Become internationally connected and export-driven
  • Enhance investment in people to grow skills and a local workforce
  • Develop a creative, vibrant international city.

Mr O’Riley says these priorities show ATEED and Auckland council are gearing up to respond more quickly, focus on high growth opportunities, and drive accountability.
